Divergent Points of View

Some of the ladies on the Wives' Bus were lamenting the absence of Olympic coverage. We do get about fifty channels, including international/Spanish versions of CNN, BBC, FOX, etc, but none of them is covering the Olympics. They seemed really scandalized by the fact that none of the channels was doing any regular or extensive Olympic coverage.

Of the Winter Olympics. In Peru. In the summer.

Maybe it's just because I'm not a huge fan of the Olympics, but I find it neither confusing nor upsetting that they aren't featuring largely in the Peruvian networks' lineup.

Scene: Australia...
Time: about twelve years ago...

Them: "Hey look at this Norway is hosting the Olympic Games"

Me: "The Olympic Games? Huh? Now? In February?"

"These are the Winter Olympic Games"

"There are Winter Olympic Games?" [puzzled look appears on my face]

Yes, not a big deal in some parts of the world. Certainly not in Australia.

See, I knew it wasn't just the "this is worse than Indonesia" Peruvians (that's a comment another expat made).

Puts me in mind of the For Better or Worse comic strip here in Manitoba back in the 1970's. Canadian teacher and American teacher are on summer vacation, in Greece I believe. Canadian teacher says, "Wow, great place eh?" and American teacher repies, "Ya, but they sure aren't doing much for the bi-centennial."
